Pick up Your Spirits and Health with Lemons

Pick Up Your Spirits and Health with Lemons

My friend drinks warm water with lemon daily and she is extremely healthy and fit. I always wondered about this so decided to have a look at the health benefits derived from doing so.

Lemon has many many benefits from keeping your digestive system healthy to keeping your spirits lifted. Lemon is also supposed to help with brain function, memory storage and recall. Lemon works as an antiseptic for your internal organs. It works with your liver, your bowels, helps with blood pressure, it is a diuretic, it helps with headaches and helps calm menopause symptoms. It clears away anxiety and lifts spirits.

What a great reason to have some lemon every day! Here are some interesting links to read up some more on this topic.

Vinegar for Health..and Weight Loss??

Vinger for Health…. and Weight Loss?

I have always known that vinegar was a great natural cleaner and disinfectant but wasn’t really sure if there was any real validity in it’s health benefits. It has been around for centuries and is a respected home remedy that works for many healthful applications but like anything, it does have it’s own cautions to be aware of if you plan to ingest it as part of your healthy lifestyle. The most common one noted is Apple cider vinegar.. it has many health benefits and uses including reducing acid reflux, blood pressure, lowering cholestrol, an acne remedy, dandruff remedy and is even of benefit to your pets as a remedy to keep fleas and ticks away, relieve skin conditions and eliminate skunk smell.

Many people are convinced this will assist in weight loss but there is no real scientific proof that this is true.. so if you do see weight loss as a result.. good for you! Cider vinegar restores an alkaline balance to your body so if your system was very acidity before, this alone helps you to digest food better and could help you lose a couple pounds as a result, but don’t expect it will change your life without also watching what you eat and exercise.
Like anything else, there are things you should know though..

Undiluted apple cider vinegar, in liquid or pill form, may damage the esophagus and other parts of the digestive tract. Apple cider vinegar drinks may damage tooth enamel if sipped.

One case report linked excessive apple cider vinegar consumption with low blood potassium levels (hypokalemia) and low bone mineral density. People with osteoporosis, low potassium levels and those taking potassium-lowering medications should use caution… check out the articles on the link below .. one lists these cautions and a couple others you may want to know about.  Consult your physician if in doubt.

Also note, there are many other kinds of vinegar besides apple cider that have excellent health benefits .. wine vinegar would be another great alternative and a nice tasty addition in salads and other dishes.

Like everything… moderation is the key.  Here is some really interesting reading on the topic:

Healthy Hearty BANANAS

Going Bananas is Good for You!
Healthy, Hearty Bananas

I LOVE bananas! I think they are the most wonderful soothing fruit that is on this earth. I eat a banana every morning before I start my workout.. it provides my belly with some substance and soothes it so I don”t feel yucky especially if I am working out with my weights, it gives me more stamina to do my workout and it provides many healthy benefits too. I wasn’t sure of the reason bananas made me feel great so looked this up for you this morning.
Many people will try to tell you not to eat bananas when you are trying to lose weight.. that they are fattening.. or that they have a high sugar content. Ok, bananas do have calories (as does all fruit) and a high natural sugar content but it is only 12 on the glycemic scale.. still within reason according the American Diabetic Association… I agree the average banana does have 110 calories which is only a few more calories than an apple. But it is like anything else, you aren’t going to eat a bunch of bananas in a day.. one is usually the average and it is good for you.

Bananas are rich in vitamin B6 and they are a good source of fiber, vitamin C, magnesium and potassium. Lack of B6 in a diet can cause weakness, irritability and insomnia. The potassium found in bananas helps to regulate blood pressure and may reduce the risk of high blood pressure and stroke. Potassium is also essential for helping muscles to contract properly during exercise and reduces cramping up. A medium-sized banana provides 400 mg of potassium -11% of daily value and 4 grams of fiber. Bananas also contain plenty of carbohydrates which are the body’s main source of energy. They are also easy to digest and very good for your stomach.

“HONEY” Have you ever seen a sick bee?

Have You Ever Seen A Sick Bee?

I really enjoy honey and the other day as I was eating my toast with honey and cinnamon, I was reading the honey jar label and it didn’t seem to have much of anything in it so decided to go online and see what I could find out as I was always told that honey was good for you. This led me to a page about bee pollen and I am convinced that we all should be consuming this product after reading the information on it.

Here are some of the good things in bee pollen:
It is known to contain 16 vitamins, including B-complex and vitamins A, C, D, and E.
It contains 16 minerals, 21 enzymes and coenzymes and all of the 18 amino acids. It contains the essence of every plant from which bees collect pollen, in combination with digestive enzymes from the bees.
It contains up to 40% protein, 55% carbohydrates and 2% fatty acids and has the potential to contribute as a major food source or humans.

In Russia, most of the elderly centurians were bee keepers that ate the scrap honey from the bottom of the hive that contained the most pollen. Bee pollen can sometimes be purchased from a natural health food store or if you have a bee keeper in your region, or perhaps even at your local market you will find this product. You can purchase it raw or mixed with honey, which is the way to ensure you get all the nutrients from it, rather than as a pill form supplement which can lose some of it’s properties in the process.

Pollen can also help you either lose or gain weight depending on your body’s needs.. smart bees! Here’s an excellent article about all the amazing qualities of bee pollen and how it can greatly enhance not only your physical health but also greatly enhance your mental health.

A word of caution, evidently if you are allergic to bees, you should probably not eat this product and consult a doctor if you have pollen allergies to see if you can use this product. Remember, just because a product is natural, it doesn’t always mean you can eat it. Always start slowly if you are going to go forth and try a new natural supplement.

Have a Healthy Digestive System

Have a Healthy Digestive System

Do you feel sometimes that your weight loss or healthy living goals aren’t being met because your belly doesn’t do a good job of digesting what you eat? Having a healthy digestive system is so very important to your health and if your belly feels good, then you feel good generally all over.. but as the old saying goes.. (or it could be a new one) what goes into your belly may not necessarily be good for you and so you need to try to avoid foods that do more harm than good for you and your goal to be healthy.

My friend Linda Wolfe is part of PICFIT and she has put up a couple of posts this past month that are worthy of mention here! One she posted tells you what happens to your body within one hour of drinking a Coke. Now there is a list of things that occur but the first one says: “in The First 10 minutes: 10 teaspoons of sugar hit your system. (100% of your recommended daily intake.) You don’t immediately vomit from the overwhelming sweetness because phosphoric acid cuts the flavor allowing you to keep it down.” and the last one says: “60 minutes: As the rave inside of you dies down you’ll start to have a sugar crash. You may become irritable and/or sluggish. You’ve also now, literally, pissed away all the water that was in the Coke. But not before infusing it with valuable nutrients your body could have used for things like even having the ability to hydrate your system or build strong bones and teeth.”

Ok, so I am no professional here but I am thinking that this probably not good for you. You can read this full article and it’s reference at: http://picfit.ning.com/profiles/blogs/what-happens-to-your-body

Linda sells a wide range of quality teas from around the world, and of course they are all delicious and a tea lovers delight (www.waylinteas.com). Tea has been around since the beginning of time and it is documented that tea is good for you generally anyway.  Linda has a great newsletter that you can subscribe to that gives you great information about tea, recipes and more.

There is a tea that she does carry that is a great digestive aid that has helped people with many digestive issues. Total Tea(TM)  provides a special balance of herbs that can help aid in digestion and elimination.

It helps to: •Restore overall digestive function, •Detoxification, •Relieve Constipation, •Increase peristalsis (forward movement) •Improve food digestion performance, •Increase circulation, •Prevent intestinal spasms, •Reduce nervousness, •Reduce gas production, •Reduce bloating and cramping, •Remove yeast and other “bad” bacteria from the system, •Inhibit “bad” bacteria production, •Improve “good” nutrient absorption, •Reduce irritation & inflammation of intestinal walls, •Improve immunity.

I drink this tea myself and besides the fact that it is a yummy tea, it does keep my digestive tract squeaky clean and healthy. Now there are many products on the market that promise to FLUSH your system, but wouldn’t you rather sit and enjoy a nice cuppa tea instead and know you are doing your body good? I am thinking that anything promising to flush your system is rather scary. I really don’t want to spend the next day running to the bathroom and who’s to say it won’t take many good nutrients that my body might like to keep along the way?

This Total Tea is even good cold sweetened with just a teaspoon of honey on ice.. you can learn more about this tea product at: www.totaltea.ca .

So the next time you go reaching for a glass of pop, think about having a cuppa tea instead. It will go a long way towards keeping you healthy and you can even put tea bags in your purse or glove box and drink it anyplace you can get hot water. Consider treating yourself even! You know those cute teacups grandma used to serve coffee and tea in? What a simple pleasure when you serve yourself a tea in a wonderful china teacup like this. …why? Because you deserve it!

Cinnamon-A very special spice!

Cinnamon – A very special spice!

Cinnamon is a wonderful spice and other than that, most people don’t place much value on the fact that it tastes great in baked goods or with their hot cider. The neat thing is that cinnamon is extremely  healthy for you too.

Cinnamon has anti-clotting abilities, it is an antibacterial, it helps to control blood sugar, boosts brain function and even can be very effective on relieving arthritis when mixed with honey .. and much more!

Cinnamon should be kept in a tightly sealed glass container in a cool, dark place. Ground cinnamon will keep for about six months, while cinnamon sticks will stay fresh for about one year stored this way. Alternatively, you can extend their shelf life by storing them in the refrigerator. To check to see if it is still fresh, smell the cinnamon. If it does not smell sweet, it is no longer fresh and should be discarded. (so I guess my cinnamon that’s been in the cupboard for a couple years is probably not terribly fresh)

So go ahead sprinkle cinnamon on your toast, in your cereal, put some on your sweet potatoes or squash, bake pears or apples and sprinkle cinnamon and honey over them or snuggle up with some hot cider with a fragrant cinnamon stick in it.

Even a 1/2 teaspoon daily  has health benefits.. if you don’t like cinnamon, heck you can even get it in capsules. Here’s a couple good resources for you to check out:

Coconut Oil and Coconut Milk- Natures Best Kept Secrets

Coconut Oil and Coconut Milk – One of Nature’s Best Kept Secrets

Coconut is one of natures best kept secrets.

Lauric acid found in coconut oil and milk has many healthful benefits to protect us from viruses and infection, and will keep you healthy!  I did my own research and came up with a couple good links for you to read more about the amazing benefits of coconut oil and milk!

Coconut oil doesn’t start to break down until the temperature gets over 350 degrees, so it keeps its’ healthfulness as long as you aren’t cooking over high temperatures. I found many ways to incorporate coconut milk into my daily diet, like adding it to my coffee for an interesting flavour, subsitituting it for half the milk in recipes. If you drink chocolate milk, add a little to your glass for added richness.

If you take the coconut milk out of the can and put it in the fridge, the cream rises to the top and the water sits on the bottom.. I have found I have used it to coat fish and chicken before adding a breading.. (great tip.. multi-grain cheerios scrunched up, make a fabulous breading!)

There are also many great recipes online that contain coconut oil and milk! Simply do a Google search and start enjoying the benefits!
