I love food and I love food especially with dips! Any kind of dip is delicious as far as I am concerned and since starting the Weight Watchers program, I have found out that some of these dips you buy in the store are so full of fat and calories and not suitable to my lifestyle any longer. So I decided to start making my own dips and evidently the family and friends love them and even request them! 🙂
The base for all my dips now is fat free plain Greek yogurt. Then the ingredients are fair game.. I like to shake it up a bit with every dip I make but have a couple of basic ones I generally stick to.
I love spicy dips and dilly dips. You can even make a nice fruit dip with fat free plain yogurt as a base, or a bbq sauce that is zingy or sweet. The trick to BBQ sauce is to wait until just the end of the cooking time to add it, just a couple minutes before removing from the grill. This way you keep the flavour of the sauce and dont use nearly as much as if you coated the meal before barbequing.
I am a bit lazy about figuring out the points on some dips.. The Spicy and dill dips are 0 by the time you figure out that one tablespoon is one serving but I count ALL dips at 1 FS WW point per tablespoon. It is just a personal choice. .
Spicy Dip
1/2 cup of fat free Greek yogurt
2 tbsp of 3 cheese ranch dressing
1-2 tbsp Sriracha sauce (to taste)
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
1/4 tsp pepper
1 tsp honey
1/2 tsp turmeric (optional)
Mix together and serve with veggies, or as a side for fries or sweet potatoes. (I add 1 tsp of low fat salad dressing and 1/4 tsp of honey to my TBSP of dip when serving with fries or sweet potatoes. – just add an extra point)
Dill Dip
1/2 cup of fat free Greek yogurt
2 tbsp of 3 cheese ranch dressing
2 tbsp of dried dill (or more to taste or 3 tbsp of fresh dill)
1 tbsp of Dill juice (from a jar of dill pickles)
1 dill pickle finely chopped
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp Turmeric (optional)
1/8 tsp of lemon
1/4 tsp pepper
1 tbsp of onion soup mix
Mix together and use with your veggies or it is also delicious over potatoes with some fresh chives. It is also lovely with fish.
BBQ sauce – I estimate 3 points per TBSP for this. You can work it out if you like. It may be less.
1/2 cup of fat free Greek yogurt
1/4 cup of ketchup
1/8 cup of honey or maple syrup or brown sugar
1/8 cup of balsamic vinegar
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1/8 tsp of lemon
1/4 tsp pepper
1 tbsp everything bagel or steak spice
1/8 tsp of cayenne pepper
1-2 TBSP Sriracha sauce – Optional – use if you like your bbq sauce to have some kick.
Mix it all together and store in a sealed container in your fridge. It is a great marinade for chicken, pork or beef. Lightly brush some on both sides of your meat, seal tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for about 2-4 hours then cook. Lightly Brush 1 tbsp of bbq sauce on your meat just before finished grilling.
Fruit Dip – 4 FS WW points for the whole thing.
1/2 cup of fat free greek yogurt
1/4 cup of vanilla fat free yogurt
1/2 tsp of vanilla
1 tsp of honey
3 tbsp of light Cool Whip
1/8 tsp of cardamon (optional)
Mix together and add to your fruit. It makes a great fruit parfait!
